WELCOME
Redwood Glen
OUR VISION:
"To Reflect Christ through Serving Others"

A WORD FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

At our two Open Houses held at the end of each Music and Drama Camp I had the pleasure to announce to the campers and their parents that the Redwood Glen board had decided to celebrate our 50th anniversary next summer by inviting every 2007 camper to come to camp for only $50.00!

Fifty years of ministry will be celebrated through these next 18 months as we will be looking back as well as looking ahead to the next 50 years of ministry.

We hope that many of our life-long Redwood Glen supporters will send us stories, pictures, and testimonies of how God has worked in their lives.

We want to hear about lives that were changed, marriages that were healed, young men and women called into full-time Christian ministry.

Redwood Glen exists so that children, youth, and adults can have a life-changing encounter with the living Christ and then impact their world in a very positive way.

In the coming months you will be receiving information about our 50th anniversary projects which include a memory book full of historical facts about the camp, and many, many stories from friends like you.

As I was preparing my talk for the Open House, I realized  that next year will be my 10th as Executive Director of Redwood Glen, My service here will be 20% of the 50 years we've been ministering to Bay Area churches.  I am so excited about hearing and sharing testimonies from former campers and staff on how God has impacted their lives and the lives of others.

Get ready for a grand celebration in 2008!

Jay E. Nordgaard,
Executive Director

A SUMMER CAMP UPDATE: The Blessings of New Life & Deep Roots
Before wrapping up her service as Summer Program Director, Sara Clark was excited to share many stories of how God moved at each of our Redwood Glen program camps.  From kindergarteners through high schoolers, Sara heard many more reports of commitments made this summer than during any other summer she has served.  Last month in our e-newsletter, we highlighted our June camps.  Below are photos and reflections from Youth Music and Drama camp (YMAD) and Adventure Camp at Indian Point held during July.
YMAD 2007
YMAD
(above) culminated with an excellent production of "The Big Picture" at our second Redwood Glen Open House this summer.  However, the week was full of youth wrestling with "the big picture" in their lives.  Brydon Marks, speaker for YMAD and youth pastor at Vallejo First Baptist, talked about heaven, and God used Brydon to speak to the hearts of the campers with many making important spiritual decisions.  One camper in particular came to YMAD this year very confused about whether the Christian life was for him.  He talked with his counselor through the week, and on the final evening, he came to the point of decision to accept Christ, and began his faith journey with Jesus.  Praise God for new life and new hope!
Jr Adventure Camp 2007
With a 38 year history, Junior Adventure camp (above) is the longest running program camp at Redwood Glen, rooting back to 1969 and the original vision of David Sato.  David along with his wife, Bonnie, continued their tradition this year of joining the campers for their final campfire.  Among this year's camper was the Sato's grandson, Masashi, who like his mother, aunt, and grandparents, have made a week at Indian Point a family tradition.

Adventure Camp was also a time of getting back to roots for Larry Jay, who stepped in last minute to serve as Camp Pastor and Camp Nurse.  Formerly church planter and pastor of Sunset Ministry in San Francisco, and now a Redwood Glen staff member, Larry came to Christ at Redwood Glen in 1977.  He eventually was called to ministry at the camp in the 1980's, but his first experience at Redwood Glen came at Junior Camp (the forerunner of Junior Adventure Camp) in the mid-1970's.

Leading morning chapel, Larry encouraged the campers to "Stop, Look, and Listen" to discover what the creation tells us of God as Creator.  According to Brad Bettencourt, who has been a counselor at Adventure Camp since the late-70's, Larry's approach was very similar to David's original philosophy for the camp.  For Larry, "Important seeds regarding faith, the environment, and creation-care were planted in my life over 30 years ago when I was in the fifth grade.  My hope was to plant seeds in the life of these campers and see how God would grow them in the years to come."

In 2008, Redwood Glen celebrates 50 years of ministry.  We plan to celebrate the legacy of camps like Adventure Camp, to remember the stories of camping veterans like David Sato, and to share the stories of lives changed like Larry Jay.  We need you to tell us your story!  If you have a testimony of how your life has been blessed because of Redwood Glen, or if you can tell us the story of a present or past Redwood Glen camp (like Middler Camp or Pony Camp), please email us.

Our 2007
Summer Staff - International Students
2007 Summer Staff International Students
(left to right)
Olga Serzhantova, Elena Kolikova, Olga Chumakova, & Svitlana Grygoryeva

Each summer, Redwood Glen partners with CCUSA (Camp Counselors USA) to bring international students to camp to serve.  CCUSA was founded to give internationals the opportunity to work in the USA and share their culture and experiences.  This year, we are blessed to share our summers with Olga Serzhantova, Elena Kolikova, Olga Chumakova, and Svitlana Grygoryeva

Olga S, who has joined our Food Service staff this summer, was a student at the Technical University in Russia before coming to Redwood Glen.  Fluent in English, German, and Russian, Olga S has many interests and much to share.  While she enjoys reading classic books and expressing herself through drawings and poetry, she is also very athletic, and enjoys basketball, volleyball, and swimming.  She also sings and dances.  She chose to come to Redwood Glen "because its the best camp and I need the best in this life."

Elena, who serves on our Housekeeping staff this summer, was studying in Togliatti, Russia before coming to Redwood Glen.  She will be starting her third year in the fall.   She has appreciated the friendly people she has met, especially the camp staff.  As someone who enjoys movies, Elena has especially appreciated the movie nights and the "chick flicks" with staff members.  She also enjoys anime and singing.  Yet it's not all fun and games.  Elena has been impressed by the work organization at camp which provides good discipline for the staff and for herself.

Olga C, who is also part of our summer Housekeeping staff, has also been impressed by the work environment at camp.  A student at the Linguistic Institute in Barnaul, Russia, Olga C has enjoyed the differences in cultures and everyday behavior she has observed among the staff and groups at camp.  With an interest in psychology, Olga C's long term goal is to help people.  She has worked on a helpline back home, and plans to continue her studies in psychology upon graduation.  Olga C also enjoys reading (usually classics) and singing, as she sang in the church choir back home.

Svitlana is our only international student not from Russia this summer.  She came to Redwood Glen from the Ukraine, where she was studying in the university at Mariupol.  As a member of our Food Service staff this summer, Svitlana enjoys sports and the friendly people she has met.

While the girls have been working hard all summer, they have been able to see the sights of America on their days off, thanks to the tour guide experience of our Redwood Glen staff.  Thus far, they have visited San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Redwood City, Disneyland, and Venice Beach.

DO YOU REMEMBER? The summer of 1967 - Redwood Glen staff
1967 Summer Staff
Earlier this summer, Lanny Giorgi emailed us pictures from his time on summer staff in 1967.  Last month, we sent out the picture above and asked for your help to identify the  two people wearing glasses.  Unfortunately, no one responded.  Their identities remain a mystery.  If you can help us, we'd appreciate it. The summer staff of 1969 (bottom row): unknown, Cynthia, Russ, Mary Orloff, George Gulbengay, Steve Vandermeer, Colleen Clemmons, and Wyman Chin.  (top row): unknown, and Lanny Giorgi. Thanks Lanny for this picture!

As we prepare for our 50th Anniversary, we would love to receive more Redwood Glen pictures from the past.  Please email them to us at news@redwoodglen.com
