WELCOME

OUR VISION:
"To
Reflect Christ through Serving Others"
A WORD FROM OUR
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
With
the 6 deciduous trees around the Siden Conference Center turning
beautiful
shades of red, orange, and yellow, we see summer fade and fall
begin. Soon the rains will come and
winter will arrive followed by the beauty of new growth in spring and
before we
know it, summer will be here!
Throughout
our lives there are seasons. Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells
us "There is a time for everything, and a
season for every activity under heaven." (NIV)
Our summer season is our
primary focus with all
the activity of summer camps, while our non-summer seasons offer a
holistic
approach to meet the needs of our pastors and their congregations.
In discussion one day with
a pastor, they said
"a church can only be as healthy as their pastor." This
is one of many reasons we partner with
pastors to provide one or more day personal retreats so they can have
the space
to rest, renew, and be restored in order to lead their churches.
Our pastors are a key
element in furthering the
work of the Kingdom of God in the greater SF
Bay Area. We recognize this and do our
best to partner with them by providing personal retreats, continuing
education events, and Pastor Sabbath weeks. This is
one way Redwood Glen invests in our
pastors.
We have 2 special one-day
clergy events coming
up in November. I would hope many of you
would show appreciation for your pastor by encouraging them to go.
One of the best gifts you
can give your pastor
is a "season for renewal."

Nordgaard,
Executive
Director

ENCOURAGING PASTORS YEAR-ROUND
"You can
dream, create, design and build the most wonderful place in the world,
but it requires people to make the dream a reality." (Walt Disney)
In 1958, a visionary group of young pastors saw their dream realized
with the purchase of 150 acres in the redwood forest which would become
Redwood Glen. The camp was built on the partnership with pastors
and local churches to provided a place for rest and spiritual
renewal. That commitment continues today.
In 2004, through the vision of Rev.
Joan Friesen and Rev. Larry Jay,
Redwood Glen launched the ministry of Metamorphosis to encourage and
equip church leaders on the journey of spiritual transformation.
Ministry in the San Francisco Bay Area is unique. Churches are
unsure how to reach their changing communities. Pastors and lay
leaders are busy, over-burdened, and uncertain of what effective
ministry looks like for this culture, day, and place.
Metamorphosis is committed to providing learning and renewal
experiences for pastors, associate staff, and other church leaders who
seek to enrich their lives and ministries. Because deep
transformational change begins with Christ from the inside out, Meta
events are different than typical conferences. Meta events
are small and intimate, offer time for personal rest and reflection,
and allow for one-on-one interaction with the event presenter and other
participants in a safe and encouraging community.
Our first annual Pastors Conference was held
in March 2007 and featured author, speaker, and pastor, Jim Herrington (seated left).
"I discovered the time spent with Jim Herrington to be very insightful
and inspiring for me in my ministry," said Rev. Bob Cherry, Pastor of Community
Baptist Church in Waterford. "His presentations were excellent
and he encouraged us to partner up and begin applying the principles he
was presenting. Jim's understanding of leading 'systems' and change was
very helpful and rewarding to me and my ministry."
In addition to our Pastors Conference, Metamorphosis also sponsors
events related to personal and congregational transformation.
Because the needs of men and women in ministry are different, our
upcoming one-day Clergy Renewal
Retreats are specialized to address the different needs each
gender encounters.
Russ Ikeda, Director of Emmaus Ministries of Silicon Valley,
will be speaking to the concerns of the men on Tuesday, November
6th. Patti Pierce,
Founder and Executive Director of Wellspring (formerly called Women at
the Well), will be ministering to the women on Thursday, November
15th. Registration forms and more information on each event can
be downloaded from the Metamorphosis website.
In addition to conferences and events, Metamorphosis also offers:
- personal retreat opportunities for
clergy,
- Pastors Sabbath weeks for
pastors and families during the summer,
- one-on-one coaching,
- congregational consultation,
- custom presentations for churches in
transition,
- pulpit supply.
Of her
experience with Metamorphosis, Rev.
Mary Graves, Pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church in San Carlos
said, "I didn't mind being the lone Presbyterian in the midst of about
20 American Baptist pastors. We were all partners in ministry in
Christ and the fellowship was very sweet. Actually, it was nice
to be around church leaders outside my denomination. There was
laughter and honesty and a prayer circle at the end where each person
could step into the middle to receive prayer. How often do you
get to have other pray for you?"
As a ministry to clergy, Metamorphosis is committed to praying for and
encouraging pastors who work hard and faithfully serve. For more
information on the ministries of Metamorphosis at Redwood Glen, check

STAFF
SPOTLIGHT: Gabriel Fabian
For a Christian camp
and conference center, ministry to children, community
organizations, local churches, and clergy are
priorities. At Redwood Glen, this commitment is reflected in our
summer camps, San Joaquin Outdoor Education, guest group reservations,
and Metamorphosis. Yet behind the scenes, there is another
priority that is just as foundation to the culture of camp, but is
typically unseen by the casual weekend guest. That ministry is
our commitment to the staff.
When
Gabriel Fabian
graduated from Pescadero High School in June of this year, his Redwood
Glen staff family was there to cheer him on and congratulate him.
"It's what we do," said Associate Director, Marshall Coleman. "We
encourage one another."
(Gaby and his aunt, Josefa Antonia with Jay Nordgaard and Joan Friesen)
Gaby first heard about Redwood Glen from
Joan Friesen,
who was substitute teaching at Pescadero High School and testing Gaby
on his English. Joan told Gaby about job opportunities at
the camp, and for two years, Gaby worked part-time as a member of our
Food Service team. After school and before work, Joan tutored
Gaby and assisted him with his senior paper so that he could be one of
the first in his family to gradute from high school. Upon
graduation, he began full-time at Redwood Glen, and now lives at the
camp.
Originally from Oaxaca, Mexico, Gaby came to the United States with his
family when he was 14. Like many other local high schoolers,
Gaby's work at Redwood Glen is his first job. His work at camp
has strengthened his English
skills, built his self-confidence, and developed valuable work skills.
According to Food Service team member Christina
Donnelly, Gaby has broken out of his shell since first beginning
at Redwood Glen. As his English has improved, he has become more
talkative, helpful, and open to guests. Gaby says that what he
enjoys most about working at Redwood Glen is serving people, though the
most challenging part is working with the kids.
Beginning as a dish washer, Gaby is being trained as a cook with pizza
as one of his specialties. Eventually, he wants to begin his
studies at a community college. In his freetime, Gaby enjoys
music and working out.
