WELCOME

OUR MISSION:
"To
Reflect Christ through Serving Others"
A WORD FROM OUR
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
I
have become more aware of the impact of
"small" in recent days.
In
our culture we tend to focus on the large - that which has
significance or power versus the small, insignificant, or powerless.
When
I was looking over the list of campers who
signed up for our Christmas special for summer camp I noticed that 26
of the
104 campers come from a "small" church of less than 150 members.
When
I was looking over the list of 28 churches
who have given mission dollars to Redwood Glen in the four years since
we went
independent, I noticed that the #4 and #5 giving churches are "smal"l
churches. They average less than 75 in worship, yet they gave
with great generosity.
When I was also looking over the list of
individual givers for the last four years, I noticed that we have a
"small" number
of givers who have made sizeable, generous donations.
Yet, I know that if we increase the number of
givers of "small" gifts, the impact would be huge!
In Luke 21 Jesus commends the widow for giving two very "small" copper
coins to the
ministry of the temple. Compared to
others her gift was very small, but it was out of her poverty that she
gave
with a generous heart.
I encourage each of you to look for small
ways in which you can have a large impact in the kingdom of God.
If just 50 additional supporters gave a
gift of $25 per month to Redwood Glen, we could fully scholarship the
over 100
campers whose families saw the value of a week-long Christian camp
experience
for their child or grandchild and took advantage of the Christmas
special for
2009 summer camp.
Scripture
tells us that individually we are
small and weak but together with God we are large and powerful. "A cord
of
three strands is not quickly broken."
You may consider your gift too small, but the impact of gifts
of any size when they come together with purpose can make a HUGE impact
in the
lives of children, youth, and adults.
Over 100 families said
camp is too important to
our children's spiritual growth and development by making camp a
priority for
their limited incomes this year.
Please consider taking a
small step by becoming
a regular giver to the ministry of Redwood Glen. Together with
God we can do mighty things and
have a powerful impact in the lives of generations to come.

Hello Friend of Redwood Glen
WELCOME to the monthly online newsletter of Redwood Glen, your local
Bay Area Christian Camp and Conference Center.
If
you would like to
subscribe and receive this monthly newsletter via email, please
register your
address via the link on our homepage (www.redwoodglen.com).
What's important to you? During
these challenging economic times, many are reconsidering how they spend
their money. Hopefully for God's people, our finances reflect our
priorities as we make choices and develop a budget. Some may
consider a week of camp or a weekend retreat a "luxury," yet in
reality, now more than ever, we need to make sacrifices and invest in
our spiritual health. Amid the chaos and fear of these
days, God does desire to speak words of peace, hope, and love to our
hearts. Are you committing the time and resources to
listen?
With summer around the corner and vacation options being weighed, we
encourage you to consider investing in the spiritual health of yourself
and your loved ones through a Redwood Glen camp and/or a church retreat.
This month, we feature an article on the importance of camp in the
lives of young people by Rev. Karen
Yee, which originally appeared in the newsletter for RAC
(Religiously Affiliated Camps). We also introduce a reader survey on what your church is
doing to recruit for camp and encourage registration for church
retreats.

DIVINE
INTERSECTIONS: The importance of
faith-based camps
(by Rev.
Karen Yee, Alameda, First Baptist
Church)
Only the
gospel of Luke
tells a story about an intersection between Jesus and the
funeral procession for a widow's only son (Luke
7:11-17). Picture
these two very different
processions approaching the gate.
The first procession is filled with sadness,
despair, helplessness, mourning, loss, and an overwhelming sense of
hopelessness as they follow a lifeless body. The other procession is
filled
with laughter, excitement, expectations, and a renewed sense of hope
and life.
This second procession is following Jesus and reminds us that who we
follow
makes all the difference. The widow had lost everything. She like some
of us
found herself at the end of the line with no other option in sight -
until her
life intersected with the unexpected presence and compassion of Jesus,
the Lord
of life and the source of hope.
Life and
death intersected at the gate and
resurrection happened. When God intersects with our lives there is
transformation.
Death no longer has power. There is nothing on earth that Christ's
power cannot
overcome. Jesus is greater than the power of death and the power of
hopelessness.
What is amazing about this event is that the widow never asked
for a miracle. She never expected the miracle. Unlike others before
her, she
did not beg Jesus to give her back her son. There was no intercession
by
others, no demonstration of faith. The widow didn't come to see
Jesus. In
fact, we don't even know if she knew who he was! However, because of
Christ's
compassion, grace, and power, when her life intersected with Jesus -
everything
changed.
Christian
camps are holy places, places where divine
intersections occur all the time. Those who attend camps go for many
different
reasons. Some are looking for fun and relaxation; some go because they
want to
meet new friends, to get away from home, work, or their stressful
routine.
There are probably some who are there because they have to be, because
someone
made them go. Like the widow, they weren't looking for anything
special, but when
their lives intersect with Jesus, transformation happens. God is
waiting to
meet us all at the gate - to give us all a hope and a future. God has
the power
and authority to make all things new - from death to resurrection.
Redwood Glen
is a place where God has
intersected in my life. I have been coming to Redwood Glen since 1976.
I
remember standing on the deck outside Smith Hall, looking out at the
cross;
stars filled the night sky. I don't remember exactly what the program
had been
about that day, but in the stillness of the night, I knew without a
doubt that
Jesus was real, his love was awesome, and I just couldn't get enough of
him. A
divine intersection occurred, and my life would never be the same
again.
Over the years,
Redwood Glen was the place where I
could test out and discover the gifts and talents God has given me to
serve
others. It was out in the Chapel in the Woods where God once again
surprised me
and placed a call in my life to give up teaching and go into full-time
ministry.
And it was here around the campfire circle, that I knew that God had
called me
to leave my home church to go and serve at the First
Baptist Church
in Alameda.
Without a doubt, God has used Redwood Glen to touch my life and so many
other
lives as well. Like so many other Christian camps, one can sense that
it is
holy ground. It is a place that has been sanctified to fulfill the
glory of
God. Even now, whenever I come, even if it's just for a Board meeting,
I get a
feeling of peace - knowing that in this special place, I have and will
encounter Jesus-and when we do, we can't help but be transformed.
Everything
changed when the two processions met at the
gate. "Fear seized all of them; and they glorified God, saying, "A
great
prophet has risen among us!" and "God has looked favorably on his
people!" This
word about him spread throughout Judea and all
the surrounding country." (Luke 7:16-17) The son was given life, the
widow's
hope was restored, and the two crowds became one. Tears turned to
laughter,
lament into shouts of praise, mourning into dancing, and all of
them were
filled with fear and awe at the glory of God. "God has looked favorably
on his
people" - a divine intersection occurred and it is occurring now - each
time a
person takes the time to visit a place like Redwood Glen.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Mike
Orlicky
How good it has been for Redwood
Glen to have an initial 2 week commitment turn into a 6 year
adventure. That is what happened to Mike Orlicky, who applied for a
temporary position on our maintenance crew and is now one of our
longer tenured staff members.
Though he only works part-time at Redwood Glen, God uses this man of
God in full-time ways as "Pastor Mike," not just at the camp, but at
Coastside Baptist Church in Half Moon Bay, where he has served for the
last 19 years. He and his wife, Julie,
helped start the church in 1990 because, as Mike says, "There was a
need for a Bible believing church there."
As a graduate of Slidell Baptist Seminary in Louisiana, Mike not only
shares his love for God and the Bible, God's Word, through his
preaching at the church, but also through his relationships with
members of the camp staff. The most rewarding part of his
ministry at Redwood Glen is the opportunity to work with young
people and to show them the "tricks of the trade," not just in
maintenance, but also in the faith. His most memorable
experiences at Redwood Glen have been sharing the gospel with members
of our staff, and visiting a former staff member in jail.
Along with part-time work at the camp and full-time ministry through
the church, Mike is also working on a doctoral degree from Master's
International School of Divinity. He currently is reading 5
books, while studying Rome and the barbarians, the high Middle Ages,
and the first World War.
If work, ministry, and studies were not enough, Mike and Julie also
serve as foster parents as their own children are now grown and out of
the house. Their eldest Michael
teaches junior high students in
Redding. Their middle son Daniel
is an account manager in Half Moon Bay,
while their youngest and only daughter Angelina
is a student at Simpson College.
Both Michael and Angelina worked at Redwood Glen while in high school.
A resident of the Bay Area since 1984, Mike is originally from Browley
in Southern California. As a sports fan, this Northern-Southern
California connection is reflected in his choice of teams. In
football, he cheers for the Raiders, and though he follows the Lakers
in basketball, we don't hold that against him.
