Redwood Glen
OUR MISSION:
"To Reflect Christ through Serving Others"

A WORD FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Redwood Glen was blessed with an estate gift a few weeks ago.  We designated most of the gift towards camp scholarships as the board seeks to reach out to lower-income families through Redwood Glen's vision, "No Child Left Inside."

Using some of the estate gift we are offering a $99 camp fee for the first 24 boys and 24 girls who register for o
ur new Senior High Camp - July 13-17 for youth completing 9th-12th grades.   Space is still available, but sign up soon on our website.

I've begun my 11th summer season here and continue to see how God moves in the lives of the children, youth, and adults who are a part of our summer camp program.

Just last week I was standing near the check-out area for Discovery Camp and saw campers with big smiles on their faces telling parents about their week of camp and all the fun they had.

I heard campers singing the songs they learned during worship.  I saw them carrying a craft project they made during the morning rotations.

First-time campers told me they'd see me next year and veteran campers couldn't wait until next summer.  My smile was wide and my eyes were moist as I witnessed the joyful reunions of campers and parents.  What a great first week of camp!

I hope many of you will choose to join us for one of our Open Houses, June 27 and/or July 11.

You will see a wonderful drama presentation by the Music and Drama campers, enjoy a yummy BBQ lunch in our new picnic area, take a tour of the camp, and refresh with a dip in the pool.  Reservations are not required, but you can save money by buying your BBQ lunch tickets in advance
.

We still have a need for volunteer counselors for Youth MAD Camp, Jr. High Camp, and Sr. High Camp.  Please contact me with any questions.

Thank you all for your continued prayers for the camp and our staff, our summer camps and staff, and our financial needs.  Without the support of people like you, we could not provide these opportunities for children, youth, and adults.

I hope to see you June 27th or July 11th at one of the Open Houses.

Jay E. Nordgaard,
Executive Director

Hello Friend of Redwood Glen
WELCOME to the monthly online newsletter of Redwood Glen, your local Bay Area Christian Camp and Conference Center

What makes camp, "camp?"  Though food and facilities are important (and we appreciate the Work Day volunteers that helped to prepare the camp for the summer), it is really the faces of the campers and staff which make camp, "camp," and one of the most effective ministries in building positive spiritual commitments to Christ, relationships with others, and appreciation for the natural beauty of creation which our God has made.

Though our camp season has begun, it is not too late to register a young person in your life for a powerful, life-changing experience at Redwood Glen.  Spaces are still available, with discounts at our new Senior High Camp next month.  Note: We are also still looking for camp counselors.  In addition, we welcome back "home" some familiar faces to our summer staff, who we feature below.

If you don't have kids or the energy to counsel, but would still like to get in on the "camping" action this summer, make plans to join us THIS SATURDAY June 27th for the first of two OPEN HOUSE CELEBRATIONS, featuring musical presentations and a BBQ meal.  More details are below.

Make plans to join us as Redwood Glen comes alive with camp this summer.

Open House
The hills are alive with the sound of music

Summer has begun at Redwood Glen as Discovery Camp concluded last week, and Children's Music And Drama (CMAD) camp has begun, filling the forests with song this week.  In conjunction with the first of two annual Open House celebrations this Saturday, June 27th, CMAD will perform its musical production, followed by a barbecue lunch, activities for kids, swimming in our pool, and tours of the camp facilities.

If you have not taken the time to join us in the redwoods, we encourage you to make plans to join us and see for yourself the positive improvements made in the past few years, which make Redwood Glen an excellent choice for your church's next retreat or conference.  See for yourself the difference!

If this Saturday does not fit into your summer schedule, make plans to join us for our second 2009 Open House on Saturday, July 11th which features the final performance of Youth Music And Drama (YMAD) camp.

Both Open House events begin at 10:30 am in the Lela Crockett Amphitheater.  Lunch and afternoon activities follow the musical performances.   Though there is no charge for our Open House celebrations, you can save money by purchasing lunch tickets in advance by calling us at (650) 879-0320 or emailing us at info@redwoodglen.com.

IT'S THE LITTLE THINGS THAT MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE:
Thanks to all the volunteers who joined us for Work Day

Work Day
Though the weather was a bit overcast, the spirit of volunteerism shined bright at Redwood Glen during our annual Work Day.
Youth groups, churches, individuals and families from across the Bay Area shared the generosity of their time and commitment
on Saturday, May 30th to work with the staff to prepare the camp for the summer.

WIth a crew of nearly 60 people, a lot was accomplished.  Though there were no big projects this year, it is the little things, like leaves raked and mattresses moved, that make the biggest difference when it comes to what is appreciated about summer preparations at camp.

Work projects completed this year included:
Raking raking raking- Raking around all buildings to give a 100 ft fire break not just for fire protection but to also beautify the grounds for guests (pictured right)
- Digging up countless bull thistles which will protect guests from thistle stings and reduce future growth
- Collecting debris around the cabins
- Cleaning all the tables and benches in the BBQ area and raking the redwood duff for the countless outdoor meals which groups will enjoy all summer
- Weeding underneath all the benches in the amphitheater and campfire areas
- Repairing straw bales and placing the shooting log in the archery range
- Stripping bark off the logs in the Indian Point campfire so that Adventure campers won't get splinters
- Constructing and moving the tent awning for the ping pong area
Going going gone- Razing and removing the old Ed Daskam rock museum building which was deemed unsafe, providing an additional flat area for group activities  (pictured right)
- Unloading and stocking firewood
- Transporting and cleaning the 28 beds and mattresses for our summer sleeping areas in Shepherd
- Digging holes to cement 3 new redwood benches in the playground for parents to watch their kids play and for guests to sit, pray, journal, or enjoy ice cream from the camp store
- Cleaning the pool and pool area as swimming is what many look forward to while here at camp

THANKS AGAIN to our volunteers.  It is because of the wonderful generous spirit of service by those who care about Redwood Glen that we have been blessed with 50 plus years of ministry, and anticipate another 50 years of witness for Christ here in the mountains of Santa Cruz.

WELCOME HOME: 2009 Summer Staff

Summer StaffPictured from left: Elena, Jamie (back), Maria Jose (front), and Amy.

Because Redwood Glen is a family, it is wonderful blessing when members of our family choose to return.  This summer, we welcome back six familiar faces to staff.

From Togliatty, Russia, Elena Kolikova joins our housekeeping staff for her third summer.  She will be graduating next summer with a degree in linguistics from the Institute of External Economic Relations, Economics, and Law.

Though we missed her last summer, Jamie Baits returns to Redwood Glen as one of our lifeguards this summer after serving as Summer Program Assistant in 2007.  She just finished her first year at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA where she double majors in Spanish and Global Studies.

From Puebla, Mexico, Marie Jose Cruz joins us for her second summer as part of our housekeeping staff.  She continues her studies in biology as a student at Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla where she will graduate in 2010.

Fresh from her first year at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, ID, where she is a nursing student, Amy Nordgaard joins us for her second year as lifeguard, as well as Camp Health Provider at Children's Music And Drama camp.

Brandon & StephanieAlso returning this summer are Brandon Benziger and Stephanie Knapp (pictured left).  Brandon has begun his second summer as Redwood Glen's Summer Program Director, with Stephanie in her second year as assistant.

Before relocating to Redwood Glen earlier in June, Brandon finished his first year at Waterford Middle School, where he serves as an independent facilitator, a one-on-one aid for a student who has cerebral palsy.  Stephanie also finished up the school year as a teaching assistant in the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing classroom at an elementary school in Waterford.

With Discovery Camp completed, both Stephanie and Brandon are excited about the summer.  Not only do they anticipate a smoother experience logistically in this their second year, they also look forward to spending more time with the kids and creating opportunities for both campers and counselors to grow as disciples of Christ.

To Elena, Jamie, Maria Jose, Amy, Brandon, and Stephanie - WELCOME HOME!!  We look forward to another wonderful summer with each of you.  We're glad you're here.
