OUR MISSION:
"To Reflect Christ through Serving Others"

A WORD FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The taillights of the last 423 campers leaving Redwood Glen on Labor Day are now a memory.
Summer is officially over for us and we now turn our efforts to the fall
.

Most of the weekends this fall have groups from all over the Bay Area coming to have their own retreat.  It will be a time to learn, grow, rest, renew, and be refreshed.

Besides our primary focus of summer camp, weekend retreats and the occasional mid-week conference give us an opportunity for guests to enjoy the beauty of camp and to be inspired and challenged in their faith.

This month our theme for this Reflections e-newsletter is about volunteers and volunteering.

You will read in the article to the right about 3 young people who gave a total of 92 days of volunteer help so that we could provide excellent service to our summer guests.  Joey, Tashi, and Andrew were a vital and significant part of our summer staff this year.

You may not be able to give several weeks during the summer, but many of you could give us a day or two every once in a while.

One Redwood Glen volunteer gets every other Friday off and he recently offered to give one long weekend a month to help in any way we need.   Wow!

We now have space to house volunteers that come on the weekends to help set up for groups, wash dishes, assist with prep for the meals, clean restrooms, etc.

Our goal is to set-up teams of 2-4 volunteers from several churches that come for 1 weekend every 8-10 weeks to help us provide quality service for our guest groups.  I hope this high level of quality service will help groups choose to come back and also tell other churches and groups about our facilities.

Please feel free to contact me to talk about how you can become part of our support staff on weekends and other times of the season.  I would be happy to share more about opportunities for you and others to share in our ministry.

Hello Friend of Redwood Glen
WELCOME to the monthly online newsletter of Redwood Glen, your local Bay Area Christian Camp and Conference Center.

As school begins and August transitions into fall, there is more than a change of seasons this year at Redwood Glen.  The decision of San Joaquin Outdoor Education to consolidate their Science Camp program at Camp Jones Gulch has created  transitions in our staffing and prompted us to build a solid base of volunteers.

This month we highlight our summer staff volunteers and introduce a new volunteer interest survey.  Like Joey, Tashi, and Andrew, we want to encourage you to consider spending some time offering your gifts to God and serving as a Redwood Glen volunteer.

A SUMMER OF SERVICE: Redwood Glen Summer Staff Volunteers
"Reflecting Christ through serving others" is the mission of Redwood Glen.  While ingrained in the paid year-round staff, it was clearly evident in the three young adults who volunteered at camp this summer - Joey Gaytan, Tashi Vedel, and Andrew Gonsalves (pictured below)

Summer Volunteers

While Tashi and Andrew are very much "at home" at Redwood Glen, having grown up through our summer camps, Joey had little exposure to the camp before volunteering this summer.  A high school junior in Half Moon Bay, Joey decide to spend 9 weeks on staff through the encouragement of his uncle, Mike Orlicky, former Redwood Glen maintenance staff.

From maintenance to food service to housekeeping, Joey was exposed to each segment of camp life and given opportunity to give each a try.  Of all the departments, housekeeping was probably the best fit.  "I don't know why," Joey says, "but cleaning is so much fun and I can do it 24/7."

While serving on summer staff allowed Joey the chance to develop new skills, live on his own, and learn to take care of himself, it also provided him the opportunity to meet some great people.  "I would love to hang out with them more before I leave.  I'm going to miss them so much,"
he says.

Like Joey, Andrew also appreciated the people with whom he served this summer. "Having fun, working with, and pulling pranks on the kitchen staff" are Andrew's highlights from his 6 weeks of volunteering.

Yet before joining camp summer staff, Andrew served as a counselor at Discovery Camp and CMAD (Children's Music And Drama camp), and was a camper at YMAD (Youth Music And Drama camp).  Through his involvement with the youth group at Vallejo First Baptist Church, Andrew has not only spent many weeks at camp but weekends also in service projects through the years.

"I have always wanted to work here," Andrew says.  "I thought it would be a good opportunity to serve."

If serving as a camp counselor for two weeks and volunteering as summer staff for six weren't enough, Andrew also participated in a mission trip to Mexico after his time at Redwood Glen before returning to high school in Benicia where he lives.

Like Andrew, both Joey and Tashi also included a mission trip in their summer of service.  For Joey, it was a mission trip at a church in Fresno before he came to Redwood Glen.   For Tashi, it was partnering with a church in Costa Rica through her church, Alameda First Baptist, before volunteering on summer staff.

Tashi's three weeks living in the staff house were not, however, her first weeks of service at Redwood Glen this summer.  Before Costa Rica, she served as a counselor at CMAD, and though she wanted to participate at YMAD (because she loves to sing), she was a year too old to be a camper and a year too young to return as a counselor.

Instead, Tashi chose to take the next step this summer by volunteering on staff.
While busy working in the kitchen and with housekeeping, she appreciates the peaceful times she finds in nature, but also "being able to live here at camp for free!"

"Redwood Glen is like my second home," she says. "I love it here."  Though she would love to stay longer among the redwoods, she needed to return to her home town, Alameda, and begin her second year in college.  But when it comes to Redwood Glen, like Joey and Andrew also, she knows she'll be back.

A TRADITION OF SERVICE: The legacy of volunteers continues
Workcrew
"We stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us."  (A Yoruba West African Proverb)

Since the beginning of this ministry in 1958, Redwood Glen was relied on the support of volunteers.  Our facilities, our programs, and our vision were built in partnership with countless individuals from local churches who gave of their time and talents.

It is because of the support and sacrifice of people like you that Redwood Glen is the blessing it is today for so many.  And through the generous ongoing giving from our Vallejo FBC Workday 2009faithful friends, the camp will continue to thrive as we grow in our mission and pursue our new vision and leave "No child left inside."

As Redwood Glen moves into the 2009 fall season, however, the decision of San Joaquin Outdoor Eduction to consolidate their Science Camp program at Camp Jones Gulch has caused the camp to restructure the staff.  (See "A Word from Our Executive Director" - April 2009)

We are confident that through God's faithful provision and the ongoing volunteer support of local churches and individuals Redwood Glen will continue to be a place of quality care and service, refreshment and renewal, for generations to come.

Can we count on you?
To assist us in strengthening our volunteer base, we are creating a skills and interest survey from which we can better utilize the vast array of talent that our supporters possess.  Whether in Food Service, Guest Services, Maintenance, or Housekeeping, whether one day a year or once a month, whether skilled or just "I wanna help," we want to encourage everyone to take 3 minutes and fill in our simple form.

To take our Redwood Glen VOLUNTEER INTEREST SURVEY: Click here.

In particular, we are looking for 2-3 volunteers the week of September 14-18 to assist as kitchen servers for the Bartimaeus Alliance for the Blind.  If you are interested, please contact us at info@redwoodglen.com.
Pick-up
Also, we are in need of a 3/4 to full ton pick-up with an 8 foot bed to serve as a workhorse truck.  Our preference is a 4x4 to assist during the heavy rains and mud of winter.  It doesn't need to look pretty.  It just needs to run.  If you are interested or have some leads, contact Executive Director, Jay Nordgaard.

As a ministry with a 50 year history, "THANK YOU" does not fully express the appreciation we have for the support that so many of you have given over the years.
As we anticipate the next 50 years, THANK YOU in advance for standing with us in partnership as we continue the legacy of volunteerism and together "reflect Christ by serving others."
