Redwood Glen's annual work day is
scheduled for SATURDAY, JUNE 5th.
We hope that you, your church, and your
friends are making plans to join us.
For Work Day 2010, we are attacking the
nitty-gritty, working in those areas that keep Redwood Glen a safe and
beautiful place in which to come. And we would love your help
doing it. As a matter of fact, we need your help to accomplish
our goals.
Come for the day by starting with a hearty
Saturday morning breakfast at
8:00am,
break for lunch and finish the day at 5:00pm. If you would like
to come on Friday night, we will make those arrangements. If you
would like to stay for Saturday dinner, we will arrange that as
well.
Please call or
email us with your intentions to come. If you choose to
stay Friday night and/or Saturday dinner. This way we will be
able to properly prepare for your arrival. You can contact us by
calling 650-879-0320 or email us at
info@redwoodglen.com.
When you contact us, please be able to
supply us with the following information:
- Name:
(everyone will get a name tag)
- Telephone
and email address: (we want to be able to confirm with you)
- Age group:
15 years or younger (must be accompanied by an adult over 18 years old)
or 16 years old or older
- Church
affiliation: (We like to keep track of who is coming from which
churches)
- Are you
a landscape architect? (We will let you know why a little
further down)
- Are you
a nurse, EMT or First Responder? If you would like to make
yourself available for cuts, scratches and the like, we would love to
know that.
- Will you
be staying Friday night and/or Saturday for dinner?
Finally, if you are willing to bring some
of the following items with you to share with others, it will lessen
the tools that Redwood Glen will have to buy. We thank you in
advance for:
- work gloves
- wheel barrels
- grub hoes/mattocks
- shovels,
- leaf rakes,
- garden rakes,
- post-hole diggers
- paint brushes, rollers, or roller pads
- folding ladders
- battery operated saws
- hammers
- nail pullers
- whatever else you can think of that might
be helpful.
Here are the descriptions of our Work Day
projects:
The David Sato
Memorial Area:
We will create a memorial area in honor of David Sato who loved Redwood
Glen and desired to develop an area dedicated to

outdoor
education. A kiosk, new benches, and a rerouted trail are the
tasks in store as we remember "Mr. Redwood Glen" and complete his
vision for an outdoor learning area, which David himself selected
during his last visit to the camp. Wondering where it is?
You'll need to join us at Work Day to find out.
Fire Barrier
Raking:
Redwood Glen is required each year to create a 100-foot fire barrier
around all of our buildings. It's a lot of work, but working
together, it will also be a lot of fun and this project makes the
facility look sooo good!
Chapel-in-the-Woods:
For this project, we will rebuild a portion of the retaining wall
behind the chapel stage and remove building debris from the area.
Moore Cabin
Retaining Wall:
The retaining wall behind Moore cabin is disintegrating. We will
remove all of the component parts, rebuild it and clean up the
surrounding area.

The
Gazebo Project:
This is actually a three-part project. We will start by removing
the rotted shingles and roofing material in preparation for a future
renovation project. This group will move a little to the right
and over the ball field fence to make repairs, replace missing boards
and make a new gate. From this project, we will move to Heiman
House, where our beloved Food Service Director, Carl, and his family
live. We have needed to complete a painting project on their home
for a long time. This will be the perfect day to accomplish this
long overdue project.
Cross Walk
Painting:
This one needs one person with a steady hand to repaint our cross walk
and stop signs on the road leading into camp. Nothing says "we
care" like a fresh coat of paint.
Hand Trenching
in Pioneer Village:
If you enjoy a good workout, this may be the project for you.
With grub hoes and mattocks, we need to retrench a path for water
run-off from the hill behind the water tanks in Pioneer Village to
eliminate the yearly erosion from the rains.
Tent Platforms
in Pioneer Village:
If you enjoy deconstructing... We will be removing the ribbing
from the platforms in Pioneer Village. We'll take 'em down and
cut 'em up for firewood.
Is there a
Landscape Architect in the house?
We have a couple of areas (across from the office and in front of
Fireside meeting room) that we would love to have redesigned. If
you have the skills, we would love to work with you. Give us a
call before Work Day to discuss the project in a little more
detail. You can call Marshall at 650-879-0320 or email him at
director@redwoodglen.com.
