OUR
MISSION:
"To
Reflect
Christ
through Serving Others"
A WORD FROM OUR
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR
Earlier
this
month,
many of us followed the reports on TV about the 33 miners
who were trapped in a Chilean mine.
One of the men who was trapped, a man named Mario, or "Super Mario," as he is referred to, said
after he was hoisted to the surface from his ordeal, "I have been with
God and I have been with the devil and God won."
Mario had spent 69 days in a dark, stench-filled cavern 2,000 feet
below the surface of the earth and as he looked up through the capsule
roof that lifted him from the depths, he could see the light from above
and knew that God had won the day!
God had given him a second chance.
In the midst of his entombment Mario wrestled with the devil, but
clung to God and God rescued him.
To believe in God is one thing; to come to know Him intimately because
He is all you have to count on and cling desperately to is something
all together different.
All of my children have grown up knowing about God. They heard about
Him in church, Sunday school, at home and through their home schooling
education.
But, for two of them, it wasn't until they attended Christian summer
camp that they made the decision that changed their lives.
Without the distractions of the world competing for their attention,
they truly understood that God was their rescuer.
Of course, God can meet us in all sorts of environments - at church, at
home, on a bus or anywhere.
Redwood Glen is one of those environments where God meets the spiritual
needs of many, many people.
People who enter our gates in darkness and leave knowing they have seen
the light.
For my children, as it is for so many, it was through the generosity of
others that allowed them their experience because we could not afford
to send them.
You can help us meet the spiritual needs of many people by prayerfully
considering financially supporting this vital ministry.

Hello
Friend
of
Redwood Glen
WELCOME
to
the
monthly online
newsletter of Redwood Glen, your local Bay Area Christian Camp and Conference Center.
Redwood Glen volunteers are the best, and the volunteers from Vallejo
are particularly valuable as they regularly devote their time and
talents to the ministry of the camp. This month we highlight
their service, and introduce you to a new addition at camp, our Redwood
Glen Library, which is now a reality because of the vision of one of
our Vallejo Volunteers. HELLO VALLEJO: Redwood Glen loves you.

V

VALLEJO. V
is
for
VOLUNTEERS. V
is
for
VALUED.
Very simply, Redwood Glen values our
Vallejo volunteers . As
much as we appreciate all who partner with our ministry, the friends of
First Baptist Church of Vallejo
have stepped up to the plate to serve on more than one occasion and in
a variety of different capacities. With two bridges to cross to
get to the redwoods, these volunteers are truly a valuable asset and a
wonderful example of the partnership Redwood Glen desires to have with
all churches in the area. This month, we'd like to highlight some
of the contributions
of
our
Vallejo
volunteers.

Vallejo
Amigos
-
Josh
Cox, Jeff Tessier, Ryan La Corte, and John S. Cox
|
Jeff Tessier, who serves as director
of Redwood Glen's Youth Music And Drama camp (YMAD) during the
summer, works with youth throughout the year at First Baptist Church of
Vallejo. During this past year, he has come to volunteer at the
camp once a month and each time he brings his "amigos," youth from the
church, who serve with him.
Earlier this month, with two kitchens, a full camp, and just over 2
weeks notice, Jeff came to our volunteer rescue rallying into service veteran
volunteer, Ryan
La Corte, and two new
"amigos," Josiah Cox and John S. Walker. For high
school students, Josiah and John, serving in the Redwood Glen kitchen
was a good experience, with Josiah learning the "ninja" technique of cake
frosting and John developing his celery chopping skills.
For Ryan, a
home schooled high school sophomore, c oming to
Redwood Glen is
almost like coming home as he served as a full-time volunteer on our
2010 summer staff along with fellow FBC Vallejo youth group member, Andrew Gonsalves (pictured
right). Andrew, who wasn't able to make the October weekend
due to a Mexico mission trip with the church, served on volunteer
summer staff in 2009 as well. As a home
schooled high school senior, he was able
to extend his 2010 service through the end of September to assist with
the large number of guests on site this fall. During September he
commuted each week from camp back to his home in Bencicia for a
community college English course. That is dedication.
Ryan and
Andrew are not the only ones from First Baptist Vallejo who consider
Redwood Glen "home." Redwood Glen
Board Member Jesse
Austile (pictured left) notes, "When I
think of leaving Vallejo to go to Redwood Glen, I think of coming home
from a long day trip. What Redwood Glen means to me is 'being at
home with God.'" With his background in construction,
Jesse has been a blessed resource to the camp, serving on our Board of
Directors for the past two years and joining us regularly at our annual
Work
Days held the first Saturday of June.
Yet
it's not just the men from Vallejo who receive our volunteer accolades.
Anita Falltrick (pictured below),
who
has
been at FBC Vallejo for 20 years, has begun to donate her time
and services to create the Redwood
Glen
library
at our Siden
Conference Center. From a
mismatched assortment of odd and end books, our library is now an
organized collection of fiction and non-fiction works. Anita, who
works at the Benicia Public library, has developed a check-out policy
and donation system to allow the collection to grow. The vision
is to have a collection of Christian works that will be spiritually
uplifting for guests on retreat. (See
article below for more information on how you can donate books to the
Redwood Glen library.)
This
current
spirit
of volunteerism from Vallejo is not a recent trend but
is rooted deep at First Baptist, inspired by such examples as John
Rikkers (pictured right). Before his heart
attack in 2006, John who was from Vallejo volunteered
his computer expertise in the office by refurbishing a computer
motherboard, and served
many summers at our Children and
Youth Music And Drama camps. His
technical gifts, sound skills, and commitment to camping are recognized
in a memorial plaque on the sound booth in the Lela Crockett
Amphitheater. John spent many hours at the "Rikkers Sound
Booth," dedicating his gifts to God's service.
Whether it's
learning a new kitchen skill or using one's gifts in the library, the
trenches, or the sound booth, the volunteers from Vallejo demonstrate
that it's about taking your time and talent, no matter what they may
be, and allowing God to use them for service.
If you'd like to offer your services to Redwood Glen, begin by taking

THE
GIFT
OF
BOOKS: Redwood Glen's New Library
"No (one) can be called friendless who has God and the companionship of
good books," writes Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Thus, when
it comes to Redwood Glen, where God's presence provides friendship for
all, a well-stocked Christian library creates a welcomed dimension of
spiritual refreshment which many seek while on retreat.
Thanks
to
Anita Falltrick Redwood Glen
now has a small but
growing collection of books to befriend guests while at camp.
Located on the first floor of our Siden Conference Center, the library
holds fiction and non-fiction Christian books which may be checked out
and enjoyed while onsite. A bookmark allows guests to note the
page where they left off so that they can continue their reading at
home when they obtain the book from a library or Christian bookstore.
Like a retreat speaker, Redwood Glen's library introduces retreatants
to a variety of topics and authors which they can further explore when
returning home from the mountain. With fiction and non-fiction
titles by respected Christian authors, there is currently
something for everyone. The plan, however, is to expand the collection.
On amazon.com, Anita has
established the "Redwood Glen Library" wishlist. This list
reflects the book titles and authors which our librarian would like to
see in the collection. Individuals may purchase these books
through Amazon, and have them donated to the camp library. A book
plate would mark the donation, which can be given "in honor of" or "in
memory of" an individual. From the nearly 60 titles, donors have
the option of selecting a book that best reflects their faith, passion,
and Christian commitment.
To purchase a book via Amazon, go to amazon.com and in the
right side box, "Find someone's Wish List" type in "Redwood Glen
Library." Select a book, add it to your online cart, pay for it,
and when checking out, ship the book directly to Redwood Glen. We
will be notified and send confirmation of delivery, along with a thank
you letter acknowledging your donation for tax purposes.
If individuals have actual books they would like to consider donating
to the library, download and complete a Redwood Glen Library
Donation Form, attach to the donated items, and call the camp
office at (650) 879-0320 to arrange a drop off time. For more
information on donating to the Library, click the link here.
