THE
PASTOR AS LEADER |
|
| by
Joan Friesen |
|
What hat
are you wearing?
As pastors we wear many different hats:
preacher, counselor, teacher, administrator, and
spiritual presence, but the bottom line for me is
this -- our churches pay us to lead them.
The whole idea of what it means to pastor/lead a
church is continually changing. When my father
pastored during the 50's and 60's everyone had a
clear idea of who the pastor was and what he was
supposed to do. The congregation looked to the
pastor for guidance and then got busy doing the
ministry.
As I began my first pastorate in the 80's, churches
were beginning to move towards a staff-driven model
where paid personnel drove the ministries and made
programs happen.
Shift gears again. Those who are coming new into the
church today are wanting and even expecting to have
a voice in decision-making and ministry direction.
This further complicates how we define ourselves as
pastor/leader in the church as we have to again
re-navigate our role.
This is one reason I'm glad Jim Herrington will be
with us in March for our first annual Pastor's
Conference. Jim has experienced these shifts himself
and will help us look at ourselves as leaders. (See
the information below to register.) I encourage you
to take some time for yourself and join us for this
special event.

7
Disciplines of Extraordinary Leaders
Want to take your leadership up a notch? We
recommend Practicing Greatness as a good tool
to get you started.
from the foreword by Ken Blanchard
"In Practicing Greatness,
Reggie contends that
spiritual leaders self-select into greatness by
practicing seven lifelong disciplines:
self-awareness, self-development, self-management,
missional clarity, making good decisions, engaging
with people, and cultivating aloneness. He devotes a
chapter to each of these disciplines, identifying
the strategic issues in each that can help leaders
practice what is most important to do as the leader.
This is why I think Practicing Greatness is a
hard-hitting leadership book, not just a collection
of inspirational thoughts.
"If you want to make a
difference in the lives of
the people you touch, read Practicing
Greatness and
begin the journey. While Reggie devotes a fair
amount of time to self -- self-awareness and
self-management -- he definitely believes that
leadership is not about you. Although it starts on
the inside, it moves to the outside when you realize
that greatness begins with a clear vision that
inspires people to get into the act of forgetting
about themselves and committing to the greatest good."
Many
pastors don't take the time to focus on their
own needs and growth and then wonder why their
church lacks health and growth. If you've read this
book, but it's been a while, or if it's a new read
it's worth picking up. After all, your ministry may
feel like it's overwhelming, but the one thing you
have greatest control over is you!
