WELCOME
OUR MISSION: "To Reflect
Christ through Serving Others"
A word from new
Executive Director, Mike Socia
A NEW YEAR:
A NEW OPPORTUNITY TO FOCUS
The other day, my wife and I
were walking out of a store when I
noticed a father and son walking out
in front of us.
As we made our way out the door, the
father went left and his son went
right. Then I watched as the dad
stopped and yelled to his son,
"Jimmy...FOCUS."
At that point, the son turned and ran
to be with his father as they
continued on to their car.
The 2012 theme for the staff,
volunteers and the summer camp program
at Redwood Glen will be "FOCUS,"
taken from Hebrews 12:1-2: And
let us run with perseverance the
race marked out for us, fixing our
eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and
perfecter of faith.
Kids who want to have fun and staff
who love Jesus will come together this
summer to create a memorable life
changing experience.
All will attempt to FOCUS
on God's unending love. And
throughout the year we will be
challenged to FOCUS
our thoughts and programs on what God
has called us to be as a ministry.
Although we have a robust guest group
program, there is always room for
more.
There are still some weekends and mid
week opportunities available that
might serve as a perfect get away
experience for your church or non
profit group. (See right column below for dates.)
Think about small groups in your
church that might desire a time of
training, orientation or
retreat. Why not FOCUS
on spending some time with God at a
special place like Redwood Glen this
new year?
In addition, as a Board of Directors
and as staff, we will FOCUS
our efforts on how we can make Redwood
Glen the best possible Christian camp
and conference center it can be.
We want to be a resource for local
churches. If you have a program
or event idea that the center could
partner with you on, why not give us a
call?
Redwood Glen invites you to join us as
we FOCUS on making
2012 an exciting year of renewal and
growth.

Hello
Friend of Redwood Glen
WELCOME
to the monthly online
newsletter of Redwood Glen,
your local Bay Area
Christian Camp and
Conference Center. If
you would like to subscribe
and receive this monthly
newsletter via email, please

the link on our Redwood Glen
homepage (www.redwoodglen.com). THANKS!
With
the holidays past and a New
Year upon us, have you made
any 2012 resolutions?
While we at Redwood Glen
have not made any
"resolutions", we have
established a "buzz word" to
lead us through the new
year. FOCUS
is the theme of our summer
camps, but is also the theme
for our ministry in
2012.
In his
new monthly column, our new
Executive Director, Mike
Socia, reflects on the FOCUS
needed for Redwood Glen's
mission this year. In
our feature below, we FOCUS
on the projects our staff
has been working on to
improve our facilities and
make them more user-friendly
for our groups throughout
the year.
And
with just 24 weeks until the
start of our first camp, we
hope that you are making
plans to register your loved
ones for a week of fun,
faith, fellowship, and FOCUS
at a Redwood Glen summer
camp this year. Click here
for info on our camps.
PREPARING
FOR A NEW YEAR: New
Projects Around Camp
While Redwood
Glen is open and in
operation 12 months
of the year, the
lull in weekend
guest groups during
the late fall and
winter allows our
staff extended time
to work on projects
which improve the
experience of our
guests. Here
are some of the
projects we have
been working on:
New
sinks in our
Siden bedrooms. In our
commitment to
continually
upgrade our
facilities,
the sinks and
faucets in our Siden
Conference Center,
which was built in
the early 1990s, are being
replaced. Thanks
to New Projects
Coordinator, Rob
(right),
the rust, calcium,
and nicks that have
accumulated on
the porcelain over
the years are now
gone!
Deep
cleaning of
Siden carpets.
And thanks to Chuy
(left),
the carpets in all
the bedrooms and
meeting rooms are
getting a thorough
cleaning with the
carpet
extractor. In
addition, all the
floors have been
stripped,
refinished, and
waxed in Siden, as
well as in our Smith
Dining Hall, thanks
to Chuy and his wife
Antonia,
who are part of our
housekeeping staff.
Securing
the foosball
tent.
In a major wind
storm last month,
the tent which
covered the serving
area in our picnic
area was blown over
with its poles bent
out of shape.
The one over the
foosball tables was
spared damage, but
cement buckets have
been added and painted
to keep it secure
during the next
storm. (See
picture right.)
The new
foosball tables were
purchased earlier
this year through
funds given to the Romona
Miller
memorial fund.
Romona and husband Ray
served as Redwood
Glen Camp Resident
Managers from
1987-1995.
Tradin'
Post remodeling.
During the Millers
service, the
building which now
houses our camp
office was
built. The
building original
served as the camp
store, more commonly
known as the
"Tradin'
Post". In
1999, however, the
decision was made to
remodel the building
and move the offices
to the front and
relocate the Tradin'
Post to the
rear. After a
decade, the
decision was made
in 2010 to
consolidate the
store -- to
streamline the
souvenirs, add more
sundries and snacks,
move the merchandise
to the front of the
office, add a front
window for use
during summer camps,
and transform the
front office closet
into a little gift
shop for use
throughout the
year.
With this new
Tradin' Post working
for the staff,
guests, and campers,
the remodel
continues as the
wall is removed to
create an alcove for
more space and
easier flow.
Thanks to resident
staff volunteer Isaac
(pictured
right) the
project is well
underway.
Another round of
thanks goes to
Isaac, and regular
First Baptist
Vallejo volunteers,
Andrew
and Jeff
for their service
last month in
finishing up the
walkways to Poolside
and the restrooms at
Smith which assist access
for guests
over puddles during
the rainy season.
(See picture left)
Other projects
our staff has been
working on include
painting of parking
lines at Shepherd
and Siden (see
below), along
with painting fire
poles and various
staff areas,
cleaning all the
nooks and crannies
inside and outside
buildings, and
adding new outside
lights fixtures to
some cabins and
inside fixtures in
the women's restroom
at Smith.
As Rob has said,
"There's always
something to do
around here.
We'll never catch
up!" If you or
your church are
interested in
volunteering some
time please contact
us. We'd love
to partner with you
and put your skills
to use as we carry
on our mission and
ministry as a
camp.
Interested
in more than
volunteering and
instead using your
gifts to serve God
while possibly
making some money
this summer?
Paid
summer staff
positions
for 2012 are
available.
Contact us for
more
information.
And don't
forget to make plans
now to join us for
our annual WORK
DAY, Saturday,
June 2 as
we prepare the
grounds for a full
summer of fun,
faith, fellowship,
and FOCUS
(our 2012
theme)!

helping Redwood Glen move
